KUNSTENPLATFORM PLAN B

Reality: Inventory of the elements

The inventory of elements brings everything together in three categories:
The private exterior, the public interior and the public exterior. In a subsequent phase, it will be used as a tool for reconstructing residents' dreams.

  • The private exterior is the category that includes all private spaces and objects that can be seen while cycling along the N9. The private interior cannot be seen from the N9; it is located within the physical boundaries of the private exterior (the boundaries are usually facades consisting of walls, doors and windows – the doors and windows can sometimes offer a glimpse of the private interior when you are on the N9).

  • The public interior is the category that includes all spaces that can be accessed from the N9. Access is often possible or impossible depending on opening hours (open/closed), which indicates that the public interior often fulfils a service or commercial function. The photographs and spoken/written descriptions show or describe the exterior of the public interior, everything that can be seen from the N9.

  • The public exterior is the category that includes all spaces and objects located in the open air.
It has no hard boundaries, such as the public interior, which create a clearly physical and visually enclosed interior. It is the N9 itself (the carrier, the motorway). It is the most public category. The public exterior along the N9 is sometimes regulated by opening hours and/or visual codes such as fences, cameras, etc. When referring to the public exterior, we tend to talk about 'places' rather than 'buildings'.

For Topography of the Night-01-The Mist City, spatial designer Maxime Vancoillie collects, describes and models a series of nocturnal dream location descriptions, thereby unravelling the architecture of night-time dreams. Her research focuses on the misty city, the area between city and countryside, of which the ribbon development of the N9 is a cross-section.
