Ruderalia, a film by Joris De Rycke
Ruderalia (2023, approx. 60 min.)

Dutch spoken, English subtitles
From the perspective of a walker, we look at places where raw materials were or are being extracted on an industrial scale. The geological history of these places and the ecosystems that develop there soon become apparent. The camera looks around and zooms in on the small: stones, insects, and a leading role for plants. They are characters that give expression to the place where they are located. If the place changes, the plant will eventually disappear and make way for other species. In this way, they are not only connected to the soil, but also to the events that shape the landscape.
"Joris De Rycke shows that a different kind of nature documentary is possible, one that moves away from sensationalism and delves deeply into the complexity of nature in the Anthropocene."
