Sound walks and a map for Haren

For a year, arts platform PLAN B, together with Aulona Fetahaj and sound artist Némo Camus, organised sound walks in Haren. By listening to the environment together, we tried to explore how Haren is experienced.

We asked two questions: one before the walk – 'what do you think you will hear?' – and one during the walk – 'what do you actually hear?'. Between those two questions, a space emerged that says a lot about Haren. The rustling of the leaves took centre stage, as did the aeroplanes, trains and distant sounds from the prison. New thoughts emerged that helped us to see Haren as the intermediate zone that it is. They made us think about what a village or town actually is – and could be – and confronted us with reality. The sound walk thus became a dramaturgical process: listening to what the place itself has to say, the questions beforehand, the participants, the plants...

These workshops resulted in a small publication with text and instructions. This means that anyone can take such a walk themselves. It was presented at the village festival in Haren.
