KUNSTENPLATFORM PLAN B

The wild horse

Since early July, I have been working on creating an audio tour about the wild horse. The tour starts in the city centre of Bruges, where you gradually leave the city behind and walk into nature. Figuratively speaking, at least. I time each section of the walk and map the surroundings, which I then incorporate into the audio recordings I make. On the banks of the Bruges ramparts, I spent a whole day cataloguing everything that grew on a 100-metre stretch. Every five minutes, I moved a little further along to take notes and capture the plants in a picture. From the large cattail to the Californian cypress, from the common maple to the pigweed. Ultimately, the notes end up on a large map that you take with you on the trip.

How do we deal with the mass extinction of other organisms in our time? For PLAN B/Fieldwork, Pim Cornelussen conducts research into ecological memory loss with Een soort van Stilte (A Kind of Silence). An exercise in cross-species empathy, a quest to discover how we can feel what we have lost. In the form of a walk, you, the spectator, step into the shoes of an extinct (or endangered) species.
