Hendrik Vermeulen

Weatherwork

Visual artist Hendrik Vermeulen lives and works in places connected to a growing, imaginary map. These places relate to our reality, in which nature and technology are intertwined. His practice begins in the open air, where he searches for primal signs, such as the slope of a hill or a meander, which are mixed with human
interventions: a canal, a pipe system, a road cutting through a forest. Near such a manipulated place, he sets up a 'field station', a rudimentary shelter where he collects, draws, paints, writes and films. These observations are translated into his alphabet of sculptures, performances and in situ work, and he then records them on his map.

For Weerwerk, Hendrik Vermeulen built a field station along the banks of the vulnerable Zwalm River. This fieldwork resulted in a long frieze made of plaster, cast with local river water. Using the metaphor of a broken heart, Hendrik showed a situation of imbalance. The human being as the centre is no longer sustainable. We must contend with this tipping point.
