Seasonal Neighbours

Seasonal Neighbours is a multidisciplinary collective that explores the material and social transformations of rural life by focusing on agricultural practices, the food chain, climate and migration for seasonal labour. For Kunst & Zwalm, they turned their attention to the animals that live in the region, both visible and invisible.

Wandering sheep
Sheep have escaped to return to their nomadic pastoral life. They have become an unruly flock that roams beyond sight through fences and forests. A few traces remain - wool caught in the wires and the sounds of a shepherd trying to guide them.

Pig's field
Pigs, although invisible in the fields of Zwalm, are powerful architects of the landscape: their manure feeds the fields and the corn is grown to feed them. Even on farms, they continue to build: when it is time to give birth, they look for material to build nests. Fictional traces in the cornfield invite recognition of their presence, their role and their needs in shaping the landscape.
