Maika Garnica
/\
/\ is a non-binding interactive performance installation that focuses on connection and spatial movement. For this ever-evolving work in progress, Maika found inspiration in the maypole cult: an ancient tradition that refers to the tree of life as a sign of fertility. With a minimum of materials, she allows the participants to build a temporary collectivity that responds to the space each time.
BIO
Maika Garnica (born 1992, Belgium) obtained a Master's degree in Fine Arts and a Master of Research in Art and Design at Sint-Lucas Antwerp. Central to her practice is the relationship between environment, audience and artist. Within this triangular relationship, the body is assigned the role of social fabric and remains an instrument for exploring new and meaningful connections. She then formulates her answers in the form of sculptures, functional objects or sound installations. Depending on the context in which the specific work is shown, both the interaction and the relationship shift. Maika's work has previously been exhibited in Helsinki, Geneva, The Hague, Antwerp and Brussels. In 2015, she received the Prize Academia Belgica in Rome.
