STUWLAND - Landscapes of infrastructure

The research conducted by Sebastiaan Willemen and Lola Daels focuses on dams and reservoirs in Belgium. Although these mega-infrastructures often form a place of tranquillity in the landscape, they are primarily a symbol of humanity's urge to control natural environments. Interventions such as dams have a profound effect on ecosystems and geographical and geological aspects of the landscape. For Veldwerk, they are conducting research into the fragmented local impact of water dams on the natural and built environment, and the people who live there.

BIO

Sebastiaan Willemen (born 1990) bases his practice as an architect and urban planner on research that responds to the phenomenological urban and rural landscape. This results in projects that arise from a sense of responsibility towards their context and that deal with the impact of (landscape) infrastructures and the metabolisms that result from them.

Lola Prima Donna Daels (°1990) lives in Brussels and mainly creates in-situ and installation art. Her practice stems from long research processes in which she asks analytical and critical questions about ecological, environmental and socio-political issues. At every place she visits, Lola collects objects and materials that she redesigns and integrates into new contexts.

During joint projects, Lola and Sebastiaan create stories that are translated into temporary installations based on the socio-political or spatial situation of the context.
