WHAT DEVIOUS CUNTS WE ARE (WORK-IN-PROGRESS)
In the short documentary What Devious Cunts We Are (work in progress), Aay Liparoto sketches the story of her neighbour Charlie Carey in London. They spend an afternoon together: Vodka Red Bull and amphetamines for him, tea for her. Conversations veer between family, prison, cancer and naked women, striking a balance between laughter and tears. It soon becomes clear: Charlie is ‘a chancer, a charmer and a cunt’. He is a man with sixteen criminal convictions and a good heart. What Devious Cunts We Are is a sincere portrait that excels in its simplicity, in which the relationship between the characters slowly takes shape.
This film was screened together with Video Home System by Guusje America during the PLAN B 2018 Arts Festival. Both films focus on the interpersonal relationships of the filmmakers themselves. With the living room as a highly individual setting and dialect as a binding agent, these films open up a dialogue on sensitive subjects.
