Dries Segers
LOOKING AT A LANDSCAPE
A series of billboards throughout Bekegem; white canvases, each filled in by a different artist. These billboards were placed one month before the actual festival weekend and thus also served as an announcement.
For his billboard, Dries did not take his inspiration from the landscape itself, but from the activity that fills the landscape. The canvas offered a glimpse of a place where two countries divide, a bird spying on the enemy and three extras looking for other things. The fixed has become fleeting, a panorama dependent on the moment.
BIO
Dries Segers (born 1990, Belgium) studied at the Academy of the Arts in Iceland and trained in photography at Sint-Lucas Brussels. Dries' work has previously been shown in various national and international group and solo exhibitions, including at BOZAR (Brussels), Fotomuseum Antwerp and De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam). Looking at Dries' images always feels somewhat disorienting. The only certainty is that they are images. In a society where knowledge prevails, he wants to make room for imagination again. His images create new and unusual worlds in which the viewer mainly reflects on themselves. Only when the viewer succeeds in abandoning all possible references to reality does he gain access to the work. In this way, Dries attempts to move away from the conditioned gaze and, at the same time, returns authorship to the photographer himself.
