Jelle Martens
A series of billboards throughout Bekegem; white canvases, each filled in by a different artist. These billboards were placed one month before the actual festival weekend and thus also served as an announcement.
For the PLAN B 2018 Arts Festival, Jelle incorporated an excerpt from The Handling Shapes, a film he made in 2017 with a 16mm Bolex camera. Intrigued by human movement, he allowed this image to interact with the materiality, format and context. Within the framework of the billboard, a hand explored the surrounding space, interacting with the environment and the landscape.
BIO
Jelle Martens (°1990, B) graduated with a Master's degree in Graphic Design from Sint-Lucas Ghent. In his practice, Jelle attempts to unravel the workings and meaning behind images through paintings, drawings, photographs, film and graphic design. In this way, he creates an honest visual language that jars and compels the viewer to look. By zooming in, slowing down and reformulating, Jelle establishes new connections between objects and human actions. In his images, he is immensely interested in how objects can function as characters or how they create new connections through actions. His ultimate tip for the ideal gaze? Repeated and prolonged viewing leads – almost automatically – to understanding the world.
