Quinten Wyns
OSTEROEVER
The short documentary Oosteroever (2017) paints a portrait of Marnix Verleene, a fisherman in Ostend. While the fishing neighbourhood of the same name in the Queen of Seaside Resorts is slowly making way for tall, white apartment blocks, Quinten Wyns manages to capture it poetically through Marnix's life. Oosteroever brings the lives of the fishermen together in a fragmented assemblage: he cleverly contrasts an indirect reflection on the sea with life on shore.
Oosteroever premiered last year at the Ostend Film Festival, was screened at Filmer à Tout Prix (documentary festival in Brussels) and received an honourable mention from the jury at the Working Title Film Festival (Vicenza, Italy).
This film was screened during the PLAN B Arts Festival together with Waithood by Louisiana Mees. In both films, in addition to killing time, the role of the individual/group within a culture in crisis plays an important role. What cog are they in this world that is increasingly shaking at its foundations?
