Willem de Haan
GATES FOR BEKEGEM
Multidisciplinary artist Willem de Haan created a series of gates for well-known and unknown places in the village for the PLAN B 2018 Arts Festival. These gates were the literal and figurative link between life on the street and in the home. They invited visitors to engage in conversation with the residents.
Willem's work usually functions as a tribute to the funny and absurd situations he finds himself in every day. In a previous life, Willem responded to this with a joke, but a joke requires reflection. Because you only laugh out loud once you really understand the joke. Because he wants his work to be more than 'just a joke', he approaches a serious and critical subject from a cartoonish, sculptural, interactive and sometimes laughable position.
