William Ludwig Lutgens
COTTAGE DETENTION
A bogeyman enters the room carrying a painting. Another one hammers a
nail into the wall with a small hammer.
A third one keeps an eye on a group of farmers.
The first one hangs up the painting. The bogeymen salute.
William Ludwig Lutgens showed his first sketch film during PLAN B. In it, a group of farmers placed in temporary detention are tortured, humiliated and neglected by bogeymen in a dark, empty farmhouse.
Through drawings, paintings and installations, William smoothly navigates between different styles and influences. From neo-Dada-inspired collage techniques to simple cartoons, often with an expressive use of paint and socio-politically charged content. As a kind of artist-comedian, he casts a critical light on society through personal anecdotes, and dark humour is never far away.
BIO
William Ludwig Lutgens (born 1991, Belgium) graduated from the postgraduate programme at HISK in Ghent at the end of 2017. Prior to that, he obtained a Master's degree in Research in Art and Design at Sint-Lucas Antwerp, after first completing the Illustration and Graphic Design programme. Since 2016, he has been publishing Het Geïllustreerd Blad (The Illustrated Magazine) under his own name: a politically incorrect daily newspaper as a parody – and alternative to reality.
William participates in the FLACC residency programme in Genk and is represented by the Antwerp-based PLUS-ONE Gallery, where his first gallery exhibition took place a few months ago. In 2017, he received second prize in the Art Contest and also won the Eeckman Art Prize (Bozar, Brussels) and The Front Line - Lyra Prize (Drawing Room, Madrid).
