Maite Vanhellemont
As is my custom
In 2018, Maite Vanhellemont was a guest at the PLAN B Arts Festival as a member of the OUTLINE collective. In Bekegem, she stayed with a host family, Noël and Marijke, just like the other residents. A special bond developed which, despite their different world views, made a lasting impression on Maite. During Fieldwork I, she returned to work on the film Zoals mij gewoon is (As is my custom). Maite says: "A dialogue. Between the work and the viewer. Between the maker and the subject. Between myself and someone who may not agree with me. Between the work and the ideas I have about the world." In dialogue with Noël and Marijke, Maïte captured the everyday life of Marijke and Noël, so different from her own. Excerpts from the film and Maite's diary notes have already been shown in the church of Bekegem, while the final film is still in production.
